HAFLER P7000 Trans-Nova Professional Power Amplifier. I bought this amp for my own home stereo use, but it is just too powerful! It's 350 Watts into 8 Ohm speakers, 525W into 4 Ohms and 1050 if you run it as a bridged, Mono amp.

Why is it so good? In addition to a brilliant designer, the very wide frequency response, very fast slew rate, and 100 dB dynamic range, open up the music to a transparency matched by few current generation amps -- even at 10 or more times it's price! As an older amp, with a fabulous design (see manual and the Hafler website), and sound, it still needed upgrading. As a retired audio engineer, I did the following and I can say that it's better than new as the quality of some of the components and cleaner sound just didn't exist back then.

One Channel 2 FET pair was replaced with a matched set. All 14 power supply capacitors were replaced with premium 105C Nichicon types (old ones were poor quality, 85C types). Upgraded old-style TL072 opamps with new generation, Burr-Brown (TI) OPA1612A versions. Upgraded soft-start circuit to be more effective.

Replaced front panel, main on/off switch and corroded power fuses. Signal and Power supply leads shortened and re-routed to reduce crosstalk. Cleaned and lubed volume controls. Re-biased both channels at a slightly higher bias to improve sound and keep the amp in Class A operation slightly longer. Replaced a lot of rusty hardware with stainless screws. Upgraded case feet for better sound isolation.

Tested Frequency Response, THD, etc. See graphs in photo section. Auditioned and burned in the Amp for at least 10 hours to check operation. Built-in crossover cards if you want to use this amp for an active crossover to bi-amp speakers.

The manual gives you the correct component values to make a custom crossover for your speakers and get rid of the power-robbing and distorting passive crossovers contained in most speakers. This amp really would work well for Pro-sound applications, or Home Theatre, provided that this amp is in a cooling cabinet or well-ventilated space outside your listening room as once the amp warms up, the fans are audible. PA applications are fine too.

This amp comes with a heavy-duty, IEC power cord, a manual with all my upgrade notes, and nothing else. Please review all the photos to see its physical condition! Watch that the Red clip light only flashes on and no more than that as the amplifier will be distorting.

Also, make sure the amp gets enough cooling as it will shutdown to protect itself (Thermal LED indicators will come on). It will reset itself in a few minutes depending on the outside temperature. Connect your speakers first, then the inputs, turn the volume controls to zero and PLEASE READ the Manual BEFORE Turning the power On!

With a fixed output (CD player or other signal source), slowly turn up the Hafler controls until you have the right level. From a mix board, preamp or other variable level output, set at zero, turn the Hafler volume controls to about mid-point. Slowly raise the preamp or mixer gain until it is at a reasonable level, then adjust the Hafler's controls higher or lower to suit. For best signal to noise ratio, the level going into the amp should be fairly high, say about 10-15 dB before clipping (with music). Adjust the amp's controls for a reasonable level that won't damage your ears or your speakers! 3.5 Rack Mount (2-rack spaces).
